Football struggling to stay afoot

THE next World Cup Football will be held in Russia next year. World cup Football has always enthralled the sports lovers the world over and people talk about the previous World Cup until the next World Cup is held.
Football is gradually losing ground in Bangladesh so much so that after a few years from now people will forget about football which used to be very popular a few decades ago. The apex organisation of football Bangladesh Football Federation should take up a master plan to bring back the lost glory of the game. I still recall the golden days of Bangladeshi football in 1980s and 90s, as I was a regular spectator of the Dhaka Premier League. Football had been a craze at that time and had a huge following. The common people used to come to Dhaka stadium just to watch the game between two local football giants Abahani and Mohammedan. There was no enthusiasm among the public for any other sport not even cricket. Football stars like Salahuddin, Chuunu, Badal, Aslam, and Salam used to be treated like superstars in those days. Many reputed foreign footballers used to participate in different tournaments played at Dhaka. Of them, names like Pakir Ali, Samir Saker, Premlal, Emeka are still fresh in the memory of football lovers of yesteryears. I was very young at that time and I can still recollect those names. I would request the Bangladesh Football Federation to take adequate steps to revive the golden game of football in this country.
